Let's Talk - A Summer of Movies Part 2 (Stand Alone Titles)

In part two of this three part post, I am going to be talking about some great looking movies with only the trailers to go by. So let's see how that goes.

First up we have the super star packed This Is The End. In this movie a series of disasters threatens the lives of everyone in Hollywood and a group of A-Listers band together to survive. This movie looks set to blow cinema goers away when it's released next week. Starring great comedy actors such as James Franco, Danny McBride, Jason Segel, Paul Rudd and many more, with cameos from the incredible Emma Watson, the shameless Rihanna and even The Backstreet Boys (not a typo!), this movie could easily be the movie of the year, or at least the Summer. Jokingly teased as Pineapple Express 2, if this movie is even half as funny as Pineapple Express, you are most certainly in for a treat!

Next we have sci-fi/thriller The Purge. In this movie the world has been made perfect with the only cost being that one day every year all crime is legal. Now this trailer was intense. Real intense! I was on the edge of my seat for most of it and by the end of it I was straight on to Google trying to find out more. With Ethan Hawke as the lead going up against the sinister Rhys Wakefield in this tale of an odd utopian society with a dark side, I think we could be looking at a very special movie. Having said that, this movie will have plenty of chances to mess up and I have been disappointed by this genre on numerous occasions so personally, I will be playing this one by ear. Next we have a movie I really cannot wait for, R.I.P.D., based on the comic book Rest In Peace Department. The story of a department of deceased law enforcers who protect the living from the dead, this looks set to be the action flick of the summer (if only it could get a bit more publicity). Starring two amazing actors, Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds (King of heroes and anti heroes alike), I know without seeing this movie I'm going to love every minute of it. Due for release on the 19th of next month, I find myself wondering, "How far in advance can you book a ticket for the cinema?" Trailer

Let's Talk - A Summer of Movies Part 1 (Sequels)

So I don't know about you but I am excited for this Summer. Not so much for gaming though, with no one game making me stop and check for a release date, but for movies. Movies are getting bigger and better with new franchises, old franchises and reboots all coming to the big screen and so I'd like to run through just a fraction of these and let you know why you should go to the cinema this summer.

First of all let's talk sequels. Oh, the poor sequel. Never better than the first and just leading to the inevitable flop of the third (or 7th if you are a popular horror franchise). But recently sequels are where it's at. Just look at some seconds in the last decade or so: The Two Towers, The Hangover Part 2, The Dark Knight. All movies you would watch time and time again with out a second thought. So give sequels a chance!

Starting with RED 2! Now if you haven't seen RED, stop reading this and go watching it because to be honest, it is so much better than reading this and I will be here when you get back. Ok, now they've gone I can continue. RED (Retired and Extremely Dangerous) was an unbelievable comic book adaptation directed by Robert Schwentke and starring big names such as Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren and John Malkovich. It was by far one of the best movies of 2010 but sadly went a bit under the radar for unknown reasons. Nevertheless, great acting performances from all the cast (with special mentions to John Malkovich and Karl Urban) clinched a sequel due to be released on July 19th this year. With most of the cast returning plus a few new faces, this movie promises laughs, action and even some feels such as those from the first movie (you know exactly what I'm talking about). TRAILER

Next up is Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. Now I know what you are thinking. "Percy Jackson? Really Tramp?" I don't know why you called me Tramp. Nobody calls me Tramp. But they are your thoughts so I'll just leave it at that. So back to the movie: I actually enjoyed the first in this fantasy adventure series which revitalises ancient Greek myths for a modern audience. Although aimed at a younger audience, it had a lot of laughs and decent action coupled with a smidgen of suspense, which kept me interested for the duration of the film. I'm not going to talk too much about this movie's predecessor as I haven't seen it since its stint on Sky but I will say this movie looks good. Dodgy CGI aside, it looks good. And I'll watch anything with Nathan Fillion in it! TRAILER

Last up, we have Kick-Ass 2. If you haven't seen Kick-Ass, I'm not going to ask you to stop reading, go watch it and come back. I'm instead going to ask you to stop reading, go watch it and then re-evaluate your life choices because frankly, we don't want your kind here! (Just a little joke; I love you really. Just a little less now). So Kick-Ass 2 promise the same blend of comedy and action from the first movie, that you can only find in great comic books these days. Nerd outburst aside this movie looks incredible and with new characters played played by the likes of Jim Carey, Donald Faison and even Mark Millar himself we can hope this movie builds on that success and on to greater things. Special mention to Chloe Grace Moretz, who is going to be the best actress of the next generation and just is Hit Girl. TRAILER

Sadly these are not coming out until after summer and so I will have to cover them in later posts. Individually. At great length. Especially Sin City and Thor.
